Hardened leather armor offers basic protection while remaining relatively lightweight and flexible. Leather armor doesn't slow the wearer or require exceptional strength. With expertise, leather armor becomes presentable enough to wear in polite society, making it a favorite of scouts, merchants, and adventurers who need both protection and social acceptability.

You can only benefit from one type of armor at once, and you can't put on armor or take it off while in combat. While wearing armor, you stand out in polite society — this might result in getting turned away from certain locations or gaining a Disadvantage on tests to influence civilians in most non-military contexts. Armor with the Presentable trait avoids these social penalties.
